Popular gadget repair website iFixit has come up with a teardown video of the 15-inch MacBook Air revealing its internals. The video shows that the new MacBook Air is not meant for those who want to repair their devices on their own. In fact, the video host said that the process to disassemble MacBook Air is “a miserable experience”. iFixit was particularly impressed with the new speaker system. “The new 15-inch MacBook Air also features a phenomenal new six-speaker sound system with two tweeters and two sets of force-cancelling woofers. The new speakers deliver twice the bass depth for fuller sound, and Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos provides immersive experiences whether listening to music or watching movies,” said Apple at the keynote.

Apple discourages repairability

However, the speaker system also makes it quite tedious to repair the new MacBook. It covers the logic board, which, in turn, traps important components like the antenna assembly cover, speaker connectors, and coax connectors using tonnes of hinge cover screws. In fact, video presenter Shahram Mokhtari said that unscrewing 15-inch MacBook Air is one heck of a maze. From the teardown video, it feels that Apple is totally against the right to repair and does not want users to attempt third-party repairs if something gets faulty in the MacBook. In addition to the new speaker system, Apple has also included a new 66.5WHr battery which is roughly 25% bigger than the battery found in the 13-inch model. While there is no notable increase in the battery output due to the bigger screen, iFixit says Apple has added more cells to the new battery. It would facilitate faster charging as more cells will be able to charge simultaneously as compared to the previous battery. Apple MacBook Air 15-inch still features a finless design, which, as per iFixit is a mixed blessing. The missing fan means one less moving component that can fail. But, it also means that the MacBook might compromise by throttling the performance to maintain a healthy range of temperature. Speaking of temperature, the new MacBook Air 15-inch reached the temperature of 37.9 degrees Celsius around the CPU in the video, indicating that its fan-less design means it can heat up quite fast. Overall, iFixit gave the 15-inch MacBook Air a repairability score of 3/10, which is to say that the laptop is not quite repairable.
