Now, a report has detailed how the increased size of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will pave the way for a major camera upgrade in iPhones.

Periscope telephoto lens & 12% bigger primary sensor

The report first surfaced on the Chinese social media website Weibo where an individual said that iPhone 16 Pro models will arrive with a periscope telephoto lens and a 12% larger main camera sensor. The individual who is behind the report has sourced their information from industry insider sources. Besides offering a bigger display, the increased size of the iPhones will also allow more space for Apple to house a periscope telephoto lens, as per the report but eh individual on Weibo. While this report might sound sketchy but reputed journalist Mark German from Bloomberg has reported the same. In the latest edition of his weekly newsletter titled Power On, German has corroborated the reports of bigger displays on iPhone 16 Pro models. Apple is likely to increase the size of 2024 iPhones from 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches by “a couple tenths of an inch diagonally.” The resultant iPhone would be the largest iPhone ever built by Apple. As per Gurman, the increased size of the iPhones will make them more competitive with the flagship smartphones with bigger displays offered by companies like Samsung. While the increase in display size will not be much as per reports, it will be sufficient for Apple to add bigger batteries and a new camera system with a periscope lens. Display analyst Ross Young noted that iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively. This comes out to an increase in the size of just 0.2 inches on both devices. Talking about the periscope lens, the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to feature Apple’s first periscope lens on an iPhone. The idea is to bring a periscope telephoto lens to the largest iPhone of this year and then expand it to the ‘Pro’ model next year when it will arrive with a bigger display. With rumours of the iPhone 16 Ultra also floating around, it would not be a surprise if Apple adds a periscope lens and a bigger camera sensor on it. It is to be noted that we are more than one year away from the release of iPhone 16, therefore, these rumours must be taken with a pinch of salt as nothing is confirmed until it is officially unveiled by Apple.
