Hardware leaker @leaf_hobby previously shared a tweet regarding the Intel Meteor Lake-S desktop platform. The tweet has since been deleted, but it was not just your average innocuous tweet about an upcoming processor either. Because according to VideoCardz, there was a line that was a part of the tweet which read “It says supports windows 12 on OS list(?)”. Other items listed were 20 PCI2 5 lanes total, as well as the debut of WiFi 7. Previously, Windows Central cited sources who claims that “Microsoft is shifting to a new engineering schedule”. This new schedule will see a new “major” version of the Windows operating system coming out every three years. Considering the current Windows 11 was released in October of 2021, this would mean that this supposed Windows 12 would come as soon as next year. Details beyond that are naturally scarce for now, but it’s probably safe to expect that there will be quite the spotlight on AI applications. The Verge cites Yusuf Mehdi, head of consumer marketing at Microsoft, as saying that “As we start to develop future versions of Windows we’ll think about other places where AI should play a natural role in terms of experience”. The company has just added the Bing AI into into the taskbar of Windows 11. It has already done so for mobile versions of the Edge browser, as well as the messaging software Skype, so it would only be natural to see more of this in the next version of the operating system, assuming it will indeed be called Windows 12.
